Policy Ideas
Establish a working group of parents, educators, support staff, community members and partners to identify real and practical changes to improve school safety.
Utilize my skills as a communications professional and work with Board administration to promote the successes and excellence in all of our schools. Let’s work together to celebrate our great schools and build pride of place in the community.
Update policy 6.1 (digital technology) to ensure authentic student learning is prioritized over screen time and that technology use is age appropriate. Limit use of AI to technology literacy, including teaching students to think critically and verify AI generated information.
Work with families, educators, and health professionals to conduct a barriers review and identify improvements that can be made that are within the Board’s jurisdiction. Advocate to the Provincial government on systems that are failing our most vulnerable students.
Investigate opportunities to strengthen and streamline volunteer screening, including reliable verification of police record checks and better coordination between the Board and Hamilton Police Services. Allowing more community members to volunteer while ensuring student safety comes first.
Make it easier for community groups to pay to use schools after hours and allow organizations supporting vulnerable students to utilize school spaces at no or reduced cost.
I will seek a leadership position with the Ontario Public School Board Association, so Hamilton public schools have a direct voice at the table with the Provincial government.
Work with Board administration to review school opening procedures and ensure that custodial and administrative staff have the time and resources necessary to prepare the school and schoolyards before students and teachers arrive. Advocate at the municipal level for prioritization of school areas for municipal maintenance work. Support community volunteer groups doing cleanups on weekends, including exploring if we can open school washroom facilities.
Host a Town Hall meeting in each Ward 3 school for students, parents, educators and community members with a facilitated discussion on concerns and solutions before Spring.
